Our Favourites

CUIXMALA, Mexico

Running alongside 5km of pristine Mexican Pacific coastline, Cuixmala is an extraordinary retreat and luxury eco-resort. The private nature reserve, where the boundaries separating humans from nature disappear, covers more than 30,000 acres. Lush jungle and coconut palm groves roll into sweeping savannahs and lagoons, where protected wildlife, from zebras to crocodiles, roam free.

The varied coastline features three distinctive beaches. Playa Cuixmala is powerful and breath-taking, the perfect place to appreciate an early morning walk or take in a spectacular sunset. Caletablanca, the most tranquil beach, has a restaurant and bar. It’s ideal for swimming, snorkelling, kayaking and paddle boarding. The more rugged nature of Playa Escondida suits guests who want to swim – cautiously – with waves and is ideal for picnics and spending time surrounded by wild nature.

NOTHING IS MORE EXCITING THAN SEEING A HOUSE THAT LOOKS LIKE A FANTASY MOVIE. THIS IS THE FEELING WHEN SEEING CASA CUIXMALA, BUT THE ENVIRONMENT IS EVEN MORE IDYLLIC THAN THE CONSTRUCTION.

ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST

Guests can embark on a range of recreational pursuits, from riding horseback through the coconut plantations, surfing, snorkelling from the beach, bird spotting or mountain biking across acres of rugged terrain. Lounging by a pool or on one of the beaches is always a temptation, of course. Taking a lagoon tour, visiting the estate’s vast biodynamic farm or spending restorative time at the calm yet opulent spa are other enticing options.

Casa Cuixmala, formerly Sir James Goldsmith’s residence, is perched on a small hill overlooking a private beach, lagoons, mountains and plantations. Guests staying in any of the four suites or in the adjacent bungalows enjoy access to the spacious indoor and outdoor living areas, dining room and TV room with movie library.

Cuixmala’s 3 private villas are truly out of the ordinary, with large open air spaces that embrace nature and authentic Mexican design. Each villa provides complete privacy with indoor and outdoor living areas, private pools, luxurious en-suite bathrooms and king-size beds.

Ten charming traditional casitas of 1, 2 and 3 bedrooms are individually decorated with Mexican arts, crafts and antiques and arranged around a large swimming pool. With views stretching across the coconut plantation and to the ocean in the distance, each casita is an inland jungle hideaway.

La Loma restaurant, located in Casa Cuixmala, is a surreal space of snow-white interiors and panoramic ocean views. An exceptional team of servers and chefs provide attentive service to all guests of the suites and the adjacent bungalows. Internationally inspired fine dining, prepared with the freshest ingredients sourced daily from the farms, paired with the unmistakable white vaulted interiors or the sweeping vistas from the outdoor dining palapa make for simply unforgettable dining experiences.

Casa Gomez serves as the restaurant and main social hub for all guests staying in Cuixmala’s casitas. The restaurant and outdoor terrace feature a panoramic view looking west over Cuixmala. Traditional Mexican-inspired cuisine is on offer for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Cuixmala’s third restaurant, Caleta Blanca, is a beach-side grill.

EVERYTHING AT CUIXMALA IS DONE WITH AN EYE TOWARDS PRESERVING THE ENVIRONMENT. THE INCREDIBLE FOOD IS HARVESTED DIRECTLY FROM THE ESTATE'S ORGANIC FARMS. WILD ANIMALS ARE PROTECTED AND ROAM FREELY. IT IS TRULY PARADISE.

ELLE MAGAZINE

Created by Sir James Goldsmith, knighted for his services to ecology, the once private retreat is a haven for wildlife. The sprawling estate, set in 30,000 acres of nature reserve stretching across land, crocodile-filled lagoons and miles of private beaches, has environmentalism and sustainability are its core.

A previous guest gifted Sir James a pair of African zebras. They successfully bred and there’s now a small herd of 40 roaming freely on the estate. As well as the imported zebras, wild animals from giraffes to antelopes, jaguars and pumas are protected and roam freely around the property. There’s a sea turtle protection programme, 12,000 species of plants and birds, a vast coconut plantation and a wide variety of fruit trees and vegetables.
